Distribution is a very tedious process in getting the movie from the studio to the theaters. While process is your more traditional way of distribution. The first step to the distribution process in a film would be selling the rights. Before hitting that single red button on the camera usually a large movie production company has bought the film rights to the film. The second step would be to find a distribution company to secure a licensing agreement. An example would be The Walt Disney Company which distributes all film content of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Third step consists of finding a Producer Representative where they work with a film booker to secure leasing agreement to the distribution companies. When negotiating with a film dealer, usually movies have the distribution company host a movie screening to prospective buyers representing the theaters. The mail film theater companies that would have representatives would be AMC, Regal and Cinemark. They are know as the exhibitors in the distribution process. Once the film enters the theaters they have a certain time line of how long it will show for unless the ticket sales are still increasing the movie will stay in showing past the original end date.  When the film reaches the end of their run the DCP copies are returned to the distributor and the leasing agreement is paid out.
